Mid-summer days in Seoul are brutal — asphalt heat makes extended walking uncomfortable. That's exactly why Heunginjimun rewards an evening visit in August. After sunset you can walk, rest, and take in a striking night view in the heart of the city at no cost whatsoever. The entire park is open free of charge, every day of the year, so there's no barrier to stopping by.
What Is Heunginjimun?
Heunginjimun (興仁之門) is the eastern gate of Seoul's old city wall. Among the eight gates of the Joseon-period city fortification, it is the only one whose name is written with four Chinese characters rather than three. It also carries a structural feature found on none of the other gates: a semicircular outer barbican wall — called an *ongseong* — that projects outward from the main rampart. Built to defend the gate from attack, the curved wall wraps protectively around the gate's base. When lit up at night, this three-dimensional form gives the view real depth and drama. The composition of the gate tower framed by the encircling barbican, seen from the front, is particularly striking.
What to Do at Heunginjimun Park
The park laid out around the gate serves as the natural base for enjoying the night view. You can stand close to the illuminated gate, settle onto one of the park benches and breathe in the summer night air, or simply wander at a leisurely pace. Though the park sits right against the busy Dongdaemun shopping district, the moment you step inside the atmosphere shifts noticeably. It works equally well as a casual stroll or as a deliberate trip to photograph the night scenery.
Getting There
Access by subway is very straightforward. Take Line 1 or Line 4 to Dongdaemun Station and use Exit 6 or Exit 7 — both lead directly to Heunginjimun. Exit 1 is also within roughly 130 m. The address is 288 Jongno, Jongno-gu, Seoul (Jongno 6-ga 69).
Visitor Tips
**Cost:** No admission fee. The entire park is free to enter.
**Best time to visit:** The gate looks its finest after sunset when the floodlights are fully on. In summer, arriving after 8 p.m. ensures the lighting is at full effect.
**Avoiding the crowds:** Weekend evenings can get congested as Dongdaemun's shopping crowds spill into the area. A weekday evening, or late at night on weekends, tends to be noticeably quieter.
**Nearby:** The Dongdaemun area is dense with restaurants and cafés, so finding a meal or a drink before or after your walk is easy. If you're looking for a short urban stroll, using Heunginjimun as your anchor point and wandering slowly through the surrounding Dongdaemun neighbourhood fills a pleasant hour with little effort.
