One of the most striking scenes on Korea's East Coast is stepping off a train onto a platform where the sea stretches out directly beside you. Jeongdongjin is worth the journey for that image alone. Visit in August — when the sun rises earliest — and a single overnight train ride can deliver an unforgettable sunrise over the East Sea.
Why Jeongdongjin in August
August is the peak season for East Coast sunrise trips. In midsummer, sunrise comes as early as around 5:30 a.m., and on clear days the red light spreading above the horizon is especially vivid. July and August also see rising sea temperatures that help disperse coastal fog, increasing the odds of a clear sunrise. This seasonal appeal is part of why the Gangneung area ranked 30th nationwide in the Top 500 Korean Tourist Destinations list by Yanolja Research.
The 20–30 Minutes Before Sunrise Are Everything
To see Jeongdongjin's sunrise at its best, you need to be in position before the sun actually clears the horizon. With sunrise around 5:30 a.m. in August, aim to arrive at your chosen spot by 5:00 a.m. That window is the magic hour — the sky gradually deepens to red, and once the sun lifts above the horizon the light becomes so intense it is difficult to photograph.
There are three main vantage points. The **reef point** at the foot of the beach entrance is a local favorite where waves and sunrise frame together in a single shot; photographers who want a good position arrive early. **Jeongdongjin Station platform** is the only place where a train, the sea, and the sunrise appear in the same view — arriving on the first dawn train and watching the sunrise from the platform itself is a popular way to do it. The **Sun Cruise Hotel observation deck**, set on a coastal cliff, looks down over the entire beach and offers a more dramatic, elevated composition. The ship-shaped café at the end of the beach breakwater is also well known as a foreground element that pairs striking architecture with the rising sun.
The Overnight Train Day-Trip Route
From Seoul's Cheongnyangni Station, the Mugunghwa train takes roughly three hours to Jeongdongjin Station. Boarding a night train departing between 11:00 p.m. and midnight puts you at Jeongdongjin between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. The beach is less than a five-minute walk from the station exit, so no additional transport is needed — you step off the train and head straight to your sunrise spot.
Morning Activities After Sunrise
After the sunrise, **Morae Sigyegongwon (Hourglass Park)** is the natural next stop — about ten minutes on foot from the beach. The park's landmark is a large circular hourglass whose sand takes a full year to fall from the upper chamber to the lower. Seen against the morning sea with early sunlight on it, the effect is quite different from daytime visits. Inside the park, the Time Museum (adult admission ₩9,000) holds a collection of timepieces and includes an observation area.
Pre-Visit Checklist
Even at dawn during August's peak season, popular sunrise spots fill up quickly. The reef point and station platform start filling from about 30 minutes before sunrise, so securing your position between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. is advisable. If you plan to take the overnight train, book your ticket one to two weeks in advance to be safe. The beachside wind can be sharp in the early morning even in summer, so pack a light outer layer.
