Why October

Nestled on the slopes of Jwagusan (657 m above sea level) — the highest peak along the Hannam Geumbuk Ridgeline — in Jeungpyeong-gun, North Chungcheong Province, Jwagusan Natural Recreation Forest draws more than 500,000 visitors a year and is regarded as one of the leading forest recreation destinations in central Korea. Even so, it rarely tops the list when people think of autumn foliage. That is precisely its appeal: while crowds flock to Songnisan and Naejangsan during the same period, those in the know say this forest offers a noticeably more relaxed way to enjoy the autumn colours.

Because of its elevation, foliage here turns earlier than on lower ground. Using nearby Songnisan — where peak colour is typically expected in late October — as a reference point, the foliage around Jwagusan is estimated to be at its deepest between mid- and late October. On clear mornings the entire hillside blazes red and yellow; on misty days, the combination of fog and Samgi Reservoir creates a completely different atmosphere. October weekends make this an ideal destination for a scenic drive or a day out.

What to See and Where to Walk

The recreation forest offers several routes for taking in the autumn colour. The Birch Forest Trail is considered a popular photo spot, where the white bark of the birch trees contrasts sharply with the autumn leaves. Danpungnamuil (Maple Tree Trail) is lined on both sides with maple trees, living up to its name. For those who prefer a gentle walk over a hike, the Baramsori-gil (Wind Sound Trail) and the Samgi Reservoir Ecological Park둘레길 (loop trail) are low-effort options that keep you surrounded by foliage throughout.

If time and fitness allow, there is also a route from Byeolcheonji Park up through Jwagusan Observatory to the summit at 657 m, which takes approximately four hours return. Beyond walking, the forest has a zip line, woodland adventure facilities, and an MTB course, giving families with children plenty to fill half a day or more.

Getting There

The address is 107 Sotjeommalgil, Jeungpyeong-eup. By car, it is roughly 21 minutes from Jeungpyeong town centre. If you plan to use public transport, check timetables and service frequency directly with Jeungpyeong-gun or the recreation forest before your visit, as details are subject to change. Admission and parking are both free. Opening hours are 09:00–18:00, open every day of the year.

Accommodation and Cost Tips

A day trip is entirely feasible, but staying overnight during peak foliage lets you catch the early-morning mist over the autumn leaves as a bonus. Off-peak rates start at ₩50,000 for a three-person Forest Cabin up to ₩160,000 for a fifteen-person unit; Byeolmuri House and the Hanok Rest House both start at ₩40,000 for three persons. Peak-season rates may differ, so always check the official website before booking. Accommodation during October weekend foliage peaks tends to sell out quickly, so book as soon as your dates are confirmed.

The forest opened in July 2009 and has been selected as a Korea Tourism Organization 'Outstanding Wellness Tourism Destination' three consecutive times, reflecting consistently high standards of upkeep. It is a place many visitors arrive at without high expectations — and leave pleasantly surprised by just how rich the autumn colour turns out to be.
