Not far from downtown Boeun, granite walls standing 10–20 metres high follow a ridgeline through the trees. This is Samnyeonsanseong Fortress. Wrapping around the summit of Ojongsan (326.2 m above sea level), the fortress perimeter measures 1,680 m — roughly 1.7 km. The walls look imposing, but because the fortress sits above the Boeun Basin (approximately 200 m elevation), the actual gain from the basin floor feels closer to a 125-metre hill, so the circuit is well within reach for most visitors. A full loop takes about one hour, making an October morning more than enough time to catch both the foliage and the views.

Why October

October is when the trees growing along the walls turn red and yellow. Walking the ridgeline, you are surrounded by autumn colour on both sides of the ramparts — a combination that is hard to find in an ordinary park stroll or standard mountain hike. The pairing of tall granite stonework and crimson broadleaf trees is unique to this season. The nearby Maltijae pass is well known as a foliage spot in its own right, and the first viewpoint on the Samnyeonsanseong circuit looks directly out over Maltijae — another reason this fortress rewards an October visit.

Trail Route: Counter-clockwise from Seomunji

The recommended route starts at the west gate site (Seomunji) and proceeds counter-clockwise: south gate site (Nammunji) → east gate site (Dongmunji) → north gate site (Bukmunji). Two viewpoints punctuate the circuit. The first looks straight down onto Maltijae. The second, positioned between the east and north gates, opens onto a 360-degree panorama where the full townscape of Boeun-eup spreads out below — the spot where most visitors pause longest. Sections of the route run directly along the top of the walls, putting the scale of the fortifications right under your feet.

Getting There and Parking

Samnyeonsanseong has no dedicated car park. Parking is available along both sides of the approach road, so arriving early gives you the most choice. From where you leave your car, it is approximately 350 metres on foot along the road before the walls come into view. By car, the fortress is a short drive from Boeun-eup town centre.

If you are travelling by public transport, check current bus routes and timetables directly at Boeun Bus Terminal before your visit, as schedules are subject to change.

Before You Go

**Entry hours**: Between March and October, last entry is at 17:00. If you are visiting in the afternoon in October, aim for the morning or early afternoon. Given that the circuit takes about one hour, targeting entry by 15:00 is a safe margin.

**Trail condition**: Some sections of the walls were noted as undergoing repair work; confirm whether the work has been completed with Boeun County Office or on-site before your visit.

**Peak foliage timing**: The exact peak varies from year to year and cannot be pinpointed in advance. Plan your visit for mid-to-late October, and check local weather and foliage reports for the Boeun area before you set out for the best experience.

Samnyeonsanseong in October is uncrowded, physically undemanding, and gives you autumn foliage, open views, and layered history — all within a single hour-long walk.
