Somaemul-do in October: Cobalt Waters, a Pebble Tidal Path, and Why Autumn Is the Right Time to Visit Korea's Southern Island

Somaemul-do, a small island off Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province, reveals a tidal pebble causeway to its neighboring Lighthouse Island just twice a day — this guide tells you exactly how to time your October visit so you don't miss it.

Why October

In the southern sea off Korea's coast, there is an island you can only reach by boat. Somaemul-do belongs to Hansan-myeon, Tongyeong-si, South Gyeongsang Province, and in October the island shows its clearest face: the summer crowds have gone, the sky sits unusually high and open, and the sea turns its deepest, most vivid shade of cobalt. Cool, steady sea breezes make ridge-line walking genuinely comfortable, and the quieter trails give you room to pause and take in the autumn landscape that spills over the island's spine.

The Heart of Somaemul-do — Yeolmokgae and Lighthouse Island

Before you look at your itinerary, check the tide table. Between Somaemul-do and the small island immediately beside it — known as Lighthouse Island (등대섬) — lies Yeolmokgae, a roughly 70-metre tidal causeway paved with smooth, rounded pebbles called mongdol. The path emerges from the sea only at low tide, opening a walkable crossing just twice a day. Lighthouse Island is listed as one of the Eight Scenic Sights of Tongyeong and is designated National Scenic Site No. 18; the only way in is across Yeolmokgae. Miss the tide window and you will be standing at the edge of the water with the island in plain sight but no way to reach it.

The pebble surface can be slippery immediately after the water recedes, so wear non-slip trainers or hiking shoes and cross at a steady pace. Before you leave, call the Tongyeong City Tourism Information Centre (055-650-0580) or use a tide-table app to confirm the exact low-tide time on the day of your visit. Matching the ferry schedule with the tide window is the single most important piece of planning for this trip.

What to Do on the Island

From the ferry pier, a trekking trail follows the island's ridge. Midway along the climb you will pass a building that once served as a radar post for monitoring smuggling activity and has since reopened as the Maemuldo Customs History Museum — a convenient spot to rest on the ascent. From the ridge, Lighthouse Island and the surrounding sea spread out in a single panoramic view; on a clear October day the sight lines can reach as far as Geoje. Once Yeolmokgae is open and you cross onto Lighthouse Island, the white lighthouse set against the deep-blue water is right in front of you.

Getting There and Essential Information

Ferries to Somaemul-do depart from Tongyeong Passenger Ferry Terminal and from Jeoguhang ferry port on Geoje Island. Schedules vary by season and day of the week, so check the latest timetable directly with the ferry operator or the Tongyeong City Tourism Information Centre (055-650-0580) before you travel. If a weather warning is issued, sailings may be cancelled and access to the island suspended; if you are visiting in October, check in advance for typhoon or strong-wind advisories.

There is no admission fee and the island is open at all times. A small number of restaurants and guesthouses operate on the island, but facilities are limited — bring snacks and water from the mainland.
