When the air turns crisp and cool, a walk through a flower field is the natural response. Gyeyang Kkotmaru is known for its peak autumn display of hwanghwa (yellow sulfur) cosmos and mixed pink cosmos, which bloom together from late September through mid-October each year. Because there is no admission fee, it has become a steady favourite for anyone who wants to enjoy the season without any fuss.
Why October Is the Right Time
Cosmos begin to open as temperatures cool toward the end of September and reach full bloom in early to mid-October. Visitor accounts consistently note that the fields were still beautifully full around the Hangeul Day holiday period, while multiple bloggers describe the flowers beginning to fade after mid-October. Gyeyang District Office's official channels feature the autumn cosmos display every year, confirming it as the signature attraction of Gyeyang Kkotmaru. The sight of golden yellow hwanghwa cosmos and pink mixed cosmos flowering side by side is not something you find everywhere. Full bloom was confirmed as of late September this year, making early to mid-October the ideal window for a visit.
What You Will See
The flower fields are laid out in colour zones — yellow hwanghwa cosmos in one stretch, pink mixed cosmos in another — connected by a walking path designed so the route flows naturally from one section to the next. According to Gyeyang District Office, the kochia (daepssari) bushes along certain pathways are also accessible during the blooming season, offering additional autumn colour beyond the cosmos alone. The grounds provide many good angles for photography, so it is worth bringing a camera or keeping your phone charged.
Getting There
Gyeyang Kkotmaru is located in the Seoun-dong area of Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, behind the archery range of Gyeyang Sports Complex. By public transport, alight at the Seoun-dong Seongsang (서운동성당) bus stop — served by routes 28, 581, and 582 — or at the Gyeyang Gymnasium (계양체육관) stop — served by routes 584-1, 588, 302, and 7007 — and walk approximately ten minutes. Route 7007 runs from Cheongna International City via Hwagok Station, making it accessible from the western part of Seoul as well. If you are driving, free parking is available at the archery range car park inside Gyeyang Sports Complex.
Visitor Tips for a More Relaxed Experience
Early weekday mornings are the quietest times to visit; the fields tend to fill up on sunny weekend afternoons and around the Hangeul Day holiday, so plan ahead if you want unhurried time for photos. The site is also known to be welcoming for dogs, making it a good outing for visitors travelling with pets. Because cosmos blooming conditions vary with weather and temperature, check Gyeyang District Office's official social media or YouTube channel for up-to-date flower status before you head out. Admission is free, but autumn is short — timing your visit is the key.
