Why Odaesan — a mountain where autumn colour flows downhill

Most autumn foliage spots peak at a single moment. Odaesan is different. Colour begins at the summit of Birobong (1,563 m), works its way through the Sangwonsa area and the middle section of Seonjae-gil, and finally reaches Woljeongsa and the lower Odaecheon valley. Visit in early October for the first flush of red at high elevation, mid-October for the peak along Seonjae-gil, and late October for the lingering late-autumn colour around Woljeongsa's fir forest and the valley floor. Match your visit to the elevation, and a single trip can take in all of Odaesan's autumn in sequence.
Route 1 — Birobong & Sangwonsa: early to mid-October, the first colour on the mountain

The earliest autumn colour on Odaesan appears around Sangwonsa and the Birobong summit ridge, both well above 1,000 m. The cooler temperatures here bring colour earlier than anywhere else on the mountain, and the higher you climb the deeper the hues. Colour typically begins in early October and approaches its peak by mid-month. Looking down from the Birobong trail across the ridgeline foliage gives a strong sense of the mountain's scale. This section demands a reasonable level of fitness; an early-morning start is advisable.
Route 2 — Seonjae-gil: mid to late October, the centrepiece of the autumn season

Seonjae-gil — the valley trail connecting Sangwonsa to Woljeongsa — is considered the defining image of autumn on Odaesan. The path is mostly flat, making it accessible for walkers of all ages, and red and yellow foliage lines both sides of the Odaecheon stream throughout. The trail peaks around mid-October and becomes the highlight of any autumn visit to the mountain. The standard direction is to start at Sangwonsa and walk down toward Woljeongsa. If a full traverse feels too long, walking only the middle section and turning back is a practical alternative. There is no entrance fee.
Route 3 — Woljeongsa & Odaecheon valley: through late October, a relaxed finish to the day

The fir-tree avenue at Woljeongsa creates an unusual atmosphere as autumn colour filters in among hundreds of old firs lining both sides of the path. Even after the higher elevations have faded, this area retains colour into late October, so a later visit is unlikely to disappoint. A slow walk along the Odaecheon valley makes a natural conclusion to the day.
