August is when Jeju's sea feels most alive. On days when summer winds pick up, waves can surge directly onto the path — a visceral experience that photographs struggle to capture. Few coastal trails put you this close to the raw force of the ocean. On calmer days, arriving at dawn or early morning reveals a quieter side of the same shoreline.
What to See and Do
The stars of Handam Haean Sanchaengno are its black basalt rocks. Shaped over centuries by wind and waves after lava cooled and solidified, each formation has its own distinct silhouette — natural sculpture in every sense. Pine trees rooted between the rocks stand firm against the harsh coastal environment, creating a striking contrast.
Time your visit to low tide and the scene shifts again: broad stretches of dark stone are exposed, and a small sandy islet appears offshore. Near the trail, transparent kayak experiences are also available; a minimum of two people is required, making it a good fit for couples or families.

How to Get the Most Out of the Trail
Handam Haean Sanchaengno has two distinct routes: a lower path that runs along the water's edge and an upper path along the hillside. When waves are strong, the lower path can be covered by water — take the upper path on those days. Because each route offers a different perspective and scenery, walking one direction on the lower path and returning via the upper path lets you experience both in a single outing.
Getting There and Practical Information
The trail begins near Gwakji Beach (곽지해수욕장). Enter "Gwakji Haesuyokjang" (곽지해수욕장) in your navigation app to reach the starting point. Public parking is available nearby. From Jeju International Airport, the drive takes approximately 30 minutes. There is no admission fee.
During August's peak season, the trail can get busy at popular hours; aim for early morning or early evening if you prefer a quieter visit. Situated on Jeju's west coast, the trail is also known for its sunset views. Shade along the shoreline is limited in summer, so sun protection — sunscreen, a hat, and water — is strongly recommended before you set out.
